"Perception is real even when it is not reality" Edward de Bono

We can see how vertigo presents a risk to pilots, but how does vertigo pose an issue for leaders?

In order to answer that question, let's first start with a definition of what we are referring to when we talk about leadership vertigo:

Leadership vertigo refers to false signals being sent by our brain asserting that everything is moving along as it should when it's not.

While all of us are susceptible to experiencing this distortion in our perception, as a leader, the risk is greater because it's your vision and guidance which serves to inform your team as to whether things are going well or not.

The consequences of suffering from leadership vertigo are real and can cost your organisation millions, if not billions, of dollars, for example….Lehman Brothers, Eastman Kodak, Enron and Borders bookstores are just a few examples of this.

The focus of the book, "Leadership Vertigo" by authors S. Max Brown and Tanveer Naseer is about how you can become better at leading your employees; by reading the signals around you correctly and making the appropriate adjustments to help you stay on course with what you want to accomplish through your leadership.

The authors have developed a model using leadership principles that can help you to assess, manage, respond to and, at best, avoid instances of leadership vertigo:

Principle #1 - Build Community: An environment where people want to give their best requires a sense of belonging; a sense of community.

Principle #2 - Develop Competence: The way you relate to others directly impacts results.

Principle #3 - Earn Credibility: Credibility requires trust. Authenticity and self-awareness are paramount to establishing that trust.

Principle #4 - Cultivate Compassion: Compassion requires courage and vulnerability to listen, understand and act.

These leadership principles are not a silver bullet. Think of them as a way to guide you to a powerful way of being.
